'Cubi,
Homage to
David Smith'
1999 Stainless Steel
36" Height x 16" WidthDelicately perched, one cube upon
another, 'Cubi' is a very rare non-kinetic work
from Tom Brewitz. With he stacked cube shapes and
brushed finish, Brewitz pays homage to the great
American sculptor, David Smith.
David Smith created
contemporary sculptures in a set of work called
the "Cubi Series" back in the 1950's
and 1960's.
The Cubi Series was a
massive body of monumental sized outdoor pieces.
Smith extended up from the ground a precarious
assembly of three dimensional geometric forms
like cylinders, cubes and rectangular tubes in
combination to create his extraordinary
sculpture.
Brewitz fondness for
Smith's work is revealed in the brushwork of many
of his pieces. Here, with 'Cubi', he pays homage
to David Smith's legacy of stainless steel
geometric form creations.
Brewitz elaborates,
"In creating this design I searched for the
true essence of Smith's work. It's David Smith
condensed or reduced reflecting with a minimalist
approach."
